While most of us are familiar with laminated documents, fewer can say they’ve seen a laminator much less used one.

Recently Danny Katz with The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald mused about getting hooked on laminating, despite being sure the machine had been regifted to him. Here’s an excerpt from the piece, called “Laminator 2: Judgement Day.”

Must laminate more! But what? Not photos because my photos were already digitally preserved on to my computer. Not important financial documents because, as much as I looked, I didn’t seem to have any. The kitchen benchtops sure needed laminating but they were too big and thick to go through the little laminating slot. In fact, all the things that really needed laminating were too big to fit: if only I could laminate the back lawn, then I’d never have to mow it again.

Best of luck with your future laminating, Danny. We look forward to hearing more about your adventures in document (or lawn) preservation.

Not sure which lamintaor is best for you? We’ve gathered the best how-to’s on the web to help you make an informed decision. Also free to give us a call anytime with questions! 800.592.1306

1. Laminator Warehouse

Pouch Laminator or Roll Laminator?

A pouch laminator is a desk-top machine that is light-weight and easy to move. It uses pre-cut pieces of laminate called “pouches” to encapsulate objects in laminate on both sides. A pouch laminator is typically used to laminate objects no larger than 11″ x 17″.
A roll laminator is larger and more heavy-duty than a pouch laminator. It uses two rolls of laminate to encapsulate objects in laminate. The sealed product is then trimmed away from the rolls of film. Roll laminators are available in 12″ up to 60″ widths, and so can handle very large objects.

2. Digital Output – Choosing a Laminator Solution

A Need for Speed
While speed always matters, don’t assume that you need the fastest solution on the market, and don’t assume that the solutions are capable of running at maximum speeds in all scenarios.
Rated speeds can be muddy criteria on which to base your laminator selection. Most solutions are said to have variable rates of speed—from zero to seven feet-per-minute (fpm), for example. Some solutions allow the operator to set the speed appropriate to the job; others may involuntarily vary, dropping speed when performing labor-intensive tasks or handling a challenging substrate.
“Drying time is a key issue,” Paris suggests. “If a print can be left to dry, then generally, you can put a heat-activated laminate over it without a problem. But the print has to be totally—totally—dry. The problem is, in a production environment, you may not have the luxury of time. This is certainly the case for on-demand situations. So if the print may not have ample time to completely dry, a pressure-sensitive process may be a little bit more forgiving.”

3. Buzzle.com – How to Find the Best Laminating Machines

The Different Laminator Sizes
A lot of people buy an A4 laminator, even though their printer can print A3 size and they might want to laminate an A3 document someday. It is a better to go for the best laminator you can afford, so that when you laminate, your documents come out looking professional. When choosing the size of the laminator, you should take into consideration the maximum size that your printer can print. For example, if your printer prints up to A3 size, you should buy an A3 laminating machine. You can also get a 9″ laminating machine which is perfect for laminating A4 pages, since an A4 page is 8.4″ wide and you need to allow for borders. It is also important to choose a quality laminating machine which is simple to use and gives excellent results.
If you need a larger machine, you can get 42″ laminators although most homes or small businesses do not need something so big. If you are going to be laminating banners and larger items, you should think about a large roll laminator. If you are mainly laminating IDs or small documents, a pouch laminator might be the best option.

4. Online Skyline – How to choose the right laminator

3 easy steps to choosing the right laminator.

1. First decide which items you’ll be laminating most, Id cards, Photographs, Menue size or large sizes.

2. Next, pick the mil thickness that’s right for you.

3. Then, select your HeatSeal laminating system.

5. Fellowes – Laminating Guide

What size documents will you be laminating?

If you’ll be laminating items such as business cards, file cards, luggage tags or photos up to 4″ x 6″ — A smaller personal laminating machine may be ideal for your needs

For small and slightly larger laminating jobs (including letter and legal size documents and photos up to 8″ x 10″) — Look for personal or general office machine that accommodates these sizes

If you need to laminate any size document-even up to tabloid or poster size, larger menus or photos up to 11″ x 14″ or documents to be placed on a mounting board — Consider a heavier duty, general office laminating machine

– Graphic Arts Online, 6/2/2008 8:58:00 AM

DUSSELDORF, Germany—Running the new 56´´ 8500HS Cyclone laminator at speeds that reached 150 metres per minute, the team of Mark Elman and Glenn Koepke laminated 100 square metres of paper in the world-record time of 40.53 seconds today at the GBC Professional stand.

How did it happen?

After Mark and Glenn got the laminating machine up to speed, the “go” signal was given and the timer and sheet counter will be activated. The sheet counter will count down as sheets are laminated. When the counter reached zero, the equivalent of 100 square metres had been laminated, and the timer was stopped. An adjudicator from the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to verify the number of sheets laminated while confirming that they were free of creases and air pockets.

What was the old record?

This is a new category, so there was no current Guinness World Record—until now. The GBC engineering/operating team actually set the new record on three runs: other times clocked in at 51.75 seconds and 45.03 seconds. After a few jam-ups, and as sheets were running low (KBA donated the paper), they went for the gusto and cut more than four seconds off the previous attempt.

What kind of film was running?

Running at ultra-high speeds requires superior bonding and clean separation of prints. That’s why GBC is introducing High-bonding Strength (HBS) Film at drupa 2008. With a very aggressive adhesive, this film provides strong, long-lasting bonds at the fastest speeds while allowing for clean snapping and smooth print movement.

What’s special about this laminator?

The 8500HS Cyclone is a commercial laminator designed for single-sided lamination of high-volume print runs.

Extra-large sheets

The 8500HS Cyclone can accommodate sheet widths up to 44´´. Other GBC models are available for sheet lengths of 31´´, 44´´ and 56´´. At drupa 2008, GBC is running the 56´´ model.

High-speed Feeder

The technologically advanced Cyclone includes an integrated high-speed MABEG® feeder that can run up to 18,000 sheets per hour.

Advanced adhesion mechanism

State-of-the-art engineering developed GBC’s new Advanced Adhesion Mechanism, seen for the first time at this week at drupa. Located in the lamination unit of the GBC 8500HS Cyclone, this mechanism is designed to improve bonding at all speeds.

Smooth separation

After prints are laminated, they are separated with the aid of a track-mounted snapping assembly that remains stationary while running and maintaining its grip over the entire sheet. The result is clean and accurate separation of prints before they enter the stacker.

Single-operator control

Although a two-man crew ran the 8500HS Cyclone during the Guinness World Record Attempt, a single operator can easily control all critical functions for everyday running of the system. At the main touch-screen, the operator can quickly configure job settings including sheet length, speed ratios, film tension and separation. Job parameters can be stored in memory for recurring jobs.

Team Bios

Tony Mertlik, GBC Engineering Manager and leader of the team that developed the GBC 8500HS Cyclone, has been with the company for over 12 years and in the printing and finishing industry for over 20 years. A native of the Czech Republic, Tony is regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts on laminating systems.

Mark Elman has been with GBC since 1985. As the Manager of Equipment Development, Mark specializes in the design of high-speed commercial lamination equipment. Mark will be running the GBC 8500HS Cyclone laminator with Glenn Koepke during the Guinness World Record attempt.

Glenn Koepke, GBC Product Development and Support Specialist, works with the engineering team to develop high-speed laminators. He has been with GBC since 1992 and has traveled the world supporting the biggest finishing houses in their quest for product perfection.

GBC Commercial Laminating Solutions Group

GBC Commercial Laminating Solutions Group, a division of the American multinational ACCO Brands Corporation, specializes in manufacturing, marketing and distribution of thermal and pressure-sensitive laminating film and equipment.

Jennifer Whitehead, printweek.com, 30 April 2008

Hillside Group, the Rochdale-based print and design company, has added a wide-format digital press and laminator to its offering, to enable it to create integrated marketing campaigns.

Hillside has installed a Roland DG SolJet PRO III XC-540, 54in-wide press, along with a laminator, supplied by North West Paper, a subsidiary of The Paper Company.

The new press can deliver a print resolution of 1,440dpi and can be used on jobs such as vehicle graphics, signs, point-of-purchase materials, banners and labels.

The company already has kit including two Komori litho presses, a six-colour B2 and five-colour B3, as well as an Océ VarioStream 9000 high-volume digital press.

The decision to invest was made by Hillside Group managing director, Peter Moore, after he saw it in action at an event held in early April by North West Paper, at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry.

Moore said: “Print technologies do not exist in isolation. They are complementary because most marketing campaigns require a range of printed products and services.

“The wide format Roland DG machine gives us the ability to offer integrated campaigns, which may have an element of conventional offset print, personalised and short-run print from our digital presses, as well as wide-format work.”

Previously, the company had been outsourcing poster work, creating up to £13,000 in lost revenues last year, and so it is hoped the new investment will enable the company to keep these revenues in house, as well as developing new income streams.

Moore said that the new press and laminator would also cut down on the time it takes to deliver jobs.
